Amazon is iOS, Shopify is Android

June 26, 2021

Amazon is an amazing company, started with B2C, and in February this year, it had over 2.01 billion visits, the most visited e-commerce company in the US.

A large percentage of the products sold on Amazon are White Label (White Label) products, and operating these products is generally new to Amazon, which means that products on the Amazon platform are risky. (White Label products: products made by manufacturers, which sellers label with their brand and sell as their own.)

On Shopify there are no such problems, Shopify engages in a self-built site with the brand directly behind it, there is no manufacturer labeling. Shopify has been recognized as the darling of anti-Amazon behavior. if you think of Amazon as the iOS of e-commerce, Shopify is the Android of e-commerce, and Android is in the world scope is much bigger than iOS.

Despite Amazon's obvious giant monopoly landscape, Shopify has a broad merchant base, which is a major advantage.

Harry Finkelstein, president of Shopify stated that "Consumers are voting with their wallets in favor of autonomous brands, and it's almost certain that a consumer will choose to buy directly from an online branded shop if they are well placed to enjoy the same shopping experience as they would in a large offline store.

The direct-to-consumer approach is a trend, but the problem is that many independent brands and entrepreneurs are unable to do so. Take the examples of Kylie Jenner, who started her beauty brand Kylie Cosmetics at the age of 19, and Michael Jordan, who took the Jordan brand global, both selling billions of dollars in products.

However, Michael Jordan does not own his brand, whereas Kylie is 100% owned. No one at David Beckham, Adidas, or any of those companies you know, owns their brand. Kylie owns 100% of Kylie Cosmetics, or she owned her shares before she sold them. I think it's amazing.

Just like creators, the main reason why creators love YouTube so much is that they can create a direct connection with their fans. We're giving more power to creators and entrepreneurs, Shopify doesn't take on the business of shipping, selling, etc. It's entirely up to them to manage their shop, we just provide the platform, and that's the difference between Shopify and Amazon.
