Amazon starts "fighting" back against Shopify

June 26, 2021

Shopify has experienced explosive growth in recent years and has become a highly competitive platform worldwide. But Shopify's rise has made Amazon feel threatened.

In 2020 Shopify revealed a set of data: the latest figures for the holiday shopping week from Black Friday to Cyber Monday 2020 (27 November to 30 November), with total global sales of more than $5.1 billion for the 1 million sellers on its platform. In addition, 2020 has seen the growing importance of Shopify among the small and medium-sized seller community.

In the face of Shopify's rapid growth, Amazon seems to be starting to fight back. Sources say that Amazon has set up a secret team that is dedicated to studying Shopify and replicating some of Shopify's business model.

According to Amazon employees, Amazon has appointed Peter Larsen, vice president of consumer, to lead a project known as "Project Santos". In addition to Peter Larsen, dozens of other Amazon executives have joined the project team, all of whom have signed confidentiality agreements, to learn more about its new competitor and continue leading the e-Commerce world.
