Harry Finkelstein (entrepreneur, lawyer, and the President of Shopify)
My story with Shopify started when I was at university. I started the business in 2001 when I was a student trying to start a small t-shirt business to support myself while I was at university.
To become a good entrepreneur, I followed the advice of my mentor and went to law school at the University of Ottawa. During this time, I traveled around to meet more entrepreneurs and later met Tobias Lütke (founder of Shopify) in a cafe and started talking to Tobias and we eventually became friends.
After graduating, I called Tobias and asked him if he would let me join him as the first non-engineer worker, he agreed and that's how I joined Shopify.
Shopify is now a global e-commerce company that provides reliable tools for launching, growing, marketing, and managing retail businesses, but Shopify started as an online shop selling skis.
Tobias started the online shop because he initially found programming too boring and, as a skier, he found selling skis highly profitable and thought he might as well start an online shop selling skis to make a little bit of money and live a comfortable life.
Now, with over a million business users in 175 countries and a collection of brands such as AllBirds, GymShark, PepsiCo and Staples, Shopify has become a trusted online platform for many brands.
