Shopify acquires Primer

June 19, 2021

Primer was co-founded in 2019 by Adam Debreczeni and Russ Maschmeyer, who launched their augmented reality platform "Primer App" in April 2020, to help decorative brands, designers and design enthusiasts visualize product effects directly in real spaces. Primer App uses ARKit technology and is already available on the Apple Store.

Choose a swatch, point your phone at the wall and see the complete design in your home - that's how the Primer App gives users the ability to visualize products. the Primer App allows design enthusiasts, DIY users, design professionals, and more to be able to quickly and easily navigate their products, patterns, and finishes in their space and take photo videos to share with friends, clients share previews and allow for the purchase of their products directly from the app.

Primer has worked with dozens of tile and textile design brands, allowing brand users to visualize how tiles, wallpaper or paint will look in their homes by conceiving their designs directly using ARKit, the augmented reality platform for iPhone and iPad. The app has also received several shop recommendations from Apple.

Terms of Shopify's acquisition of Primer were not disclosed, but as part of the deal, the Primer App and service will close next month and the team of eight Primer employees will all join Shopify after the acquisition to continue building immersive AR shopping experiences at Shopify.
