The inspiring case of Tim Koch

July 1, 2021

Tim Kock has been a good reference for many people nowadays. While feeling that his profits have been in line with what happens to most newbies in the first place, his case can be inspiring for other shops. His instructions to be sucessful in Shopify are:

I. Find a niche market

He started by eliminating those products that were not doable.

  • food, because there is no control over quality.
  • electronic products, because they are too complicated to sell.
  • products that are too heavy because they are too expensive to ship.

II. Use Google Trends

"You can see that the search volume for watches is obviously higher, but the search trends for the two pineapple products are also very good and growing steadily".

Kock thought that although the market for pineapple products was small, the products were more segmented and there was relatively less competition, and wondered if there was an opportunity to make a website dedicated to selling a variety of pineapple products.

III. finding specific products to sell

Tim Kock searched on Amazon and typed in "pineapple". He found a wide range of pineapple related products such as pineapple dresses, pineapple hats, pineapple bikinis and pineapple trousers, resulting in 17 pineapple related products.

To create an organised work plan, Kim Kock used the tool https://asana.com

IV. Designing the shop logo and name

Kim named her shop Olani. Olani has a strong affinity for creativity, beauty and family activities in life. olani is trustworthy, honest and responsible. olani tends to sacrifice herself for the needs of others.

V. Building a website

Kim chose to use Shopify to build his website, upload products, add essential pages, bundle payment methods, bundle google analytics, and bundle purchased domains etc.

To upload and import products he used Oberlo: " it is easier to set the font, colour, size, etc. of the text in the product description editor here".

For product pricing, Kim made a detailed plan, with a refund rate of around 8%, a 15% discount, a Facebook ad costing around $7 per order, and a monthly Shopify shop fee, the final product pricing was reasonable.
