The US retail giant said it has partnered with e-commerce company Shopify, aiming to expand its online marketplace business.
Walmart intends to attract small and medium-sized US businesses to its Walmart.com platform. It plans to initially add 1,200 Shopify merchants to its marketplace, taking advantage of the fact that sales on digital channels have soared in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In doing so, Walmart continues to expand its functionality as Shopify increases its partnerships by adding Facebook to its customer base.
"We are excited to be able to offer customers a broad inventory while giving small businesses access to the growing traffic on Walmart.com. Shopify powers a dynamic portfolio of third-party sellers who are interested in growing their business through new and trusted channels," said Jeff Clementz, vice president, Walmart Marketplace in a company statement.
According to Clementz, "Growing the marketplace is a strategic priority, and we will be smart as we grow. Shopify has a long history of helping small businesses leverage scale, and we're proud to be part of the solution that is helping customers and other retailers."
Headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, Shopify has more than one million businesses in more than 175 countries.
This integration will allow Shopify businesses to market their products on Walmart.com, in turn, offering Walmart customers access to a wider variety of items.
The US e-commerce business grew 74% overall in the last quarter of 2020, and growth in the marketplace outpaced the overall business.
Key to the alliance
By activating the Walmart channel through Shopify, merchants will have access to:
-Inventory and order management from Shopify: Shopify will automatically keep merchants' products in sync with Walmart.com.
-Bulk marketplace list editing: This saves merchants time and effort by listing many different products and product variants.
-No additional monthly fees: They will only pay referral fees when they sell.
